Text: Luke 5:5 “Simon answered, ‘Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.
A CHOICE BETWEEN TWO MASTERS
BREAKING FREE FROM THE INFERIORITY COMPLEX
There are nights that feel endless.
Nights of casting nets and pulling up nothing.
Nights of praying and getting silence.
Nights of working hard and seeing zero results.
Peter knew that kind of night.
He was not an amateur. He was a professional fisherman. He knew the lake. He knew the season. He and his crew had toiled all night and caught nothing. Luke 5:5
Then Jesus showed up. And He gave an instruction that made no sense: “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”Luke 5:4
From a logical standpoint, Peter should have said no.
“Master, with respect, we are the experts here. We fished all night. The fish does not bite in the morning. The deep water is empty.”
But Peter did not argue. He surrendered.
“But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”
That sentence is the bridge between failure and breakthrough.
Let’s sit with Peter for a moment.
All night. That means cold, wet, tired. Ropes cutting his hands. The boat smelling of dead fish and disappointment. His partners discouraged. The bills waiting at home.
How many of us have been there?
Peter’s boat was empty. And empty boats feel personal.
The enemy whispers: “Maybe you are not called. Maybe you missed God. Maybe you should quit.”
But Jesus was about to teach Peter something we all need: Divine instruction succeeds where human effort fails.
“MASTER, WE’VE WORKED HARD... AND CAUGHT NOTHING”
Notice Peter did not fake it. He was honest with Jesus.
He named 3 things:
God is not afraid of your honesty. He already knows the boat is empty. Psalm 62:8 “Pour out your hearts to him.”
Too many believers pretend everything is fine while the nets are empty. But God meets us in truth. Peter told Jesus exactly where he was. And that is where the miracle started.
This is the most important 5 words in the story.
“But because you say so...”
Peter had 3 options:
He chose C.
That is obedience in the face of failure.
It’s not obedience when things are working. That’s easy.
It’s obedience when your experience says “this won’t work,” but God’s word says “do it again.”
Faith does not deny reality. Peter admitted the failure.
Faith just refuses to let reality have the final word. God’s word does.
Was Jesus trying to embarrass Peter? No. He was trying to elevate him.
God often asks us to repeat the last thing He told us, especially after failure, for 4 reasons:
Peter obeyed. And the result was ridiculous.
_“When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.” Luke 5:6
He called partners. Both boats were so full they began to sink.
That one act of obedience did 4 things:
One “because you say so” changed his entire destiny.
We live in a “data-driven” generation. If it does not add up, we do not do it.
But the Kingdom runs on a different equation: Obedience + God = Multiplication.
Here’s what “let down the nets again” might look like for you:
It feels illogical. But “because you say so” is the language of faith.
He wants the nets, not just the fish. He wants your yes.
Peter was right about the empty night. But Jesus was righter about the coming miracle.
The miracle happened when the nets went down, not when Peter thought about it. James 1:22 “Be doers of the word.”
Peter gained fish that day. But he gained Jesus. And Jesus was the greater catch.
1 Samuel 2:30 “Those who honor me I will honor.” When you obey His word above your feelings, He glorifies Himself in your life.
Maybe you feel like Peter this morning.
You have worked hard. You have prayed hard. You have given your best. And the result is... nothing.
I hear the Lord saying to you what He said to Peter: “Let down the nets one more time.”
Not because the strategy changed.
But because I am here now.
Your “because you say so” is about to become your breakthrough.
The emptiness is about to become abundance.
The failure is about to become a testimony.
Do not quit 5 minutes before the miracle.
This is not the only time God asked for obedience after failure:
God’s pattern: He asks for obedience first, then He brings the miracle.
Prayer:
Faithful Lord,
You see my empty nets. You see the nights I’ve worked hard and caught nothing.
Today I choose to say what Peter said: “Because You say so, I will obey.”
Give me faith that outruns my logic.
Give me courage to try again with You.
Let my obedience open the door for Your overflow.
Forgive me for the times I argued instead of obeyed.
From now on, I will fish where You tell me to fish.
In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.

When your “I’ve tried everything” meets God’s “Try it My way,” miracles happen.
Obedience is the key that turns failure into favor.

Let’s sit with Peter for a moment.

- The marriage you’ve worked on for years and it still feels dry
- The ministry you’ve poured into with little fruit
- The business where you have tried every strategy and sales are still zero
- The career where you applied, interviewed, and got rejected again
- The prayer you have prayed for healing, for a child, for direction... and nothing
Peter’s boat was empty. And empty boats feel personal.

- The duration: “all night”
- The result: “haven’t caught anything”

THE TURNING POINT: “BUT BECAUSE YOU SAY SO”
This is the most important 5 words in the story.
“But because you say so...”
Peter had 3 options:
- Argue: “Jesus, you’re a carpenter. I’m the fisherman.”
- Quit: “It’s over. Let’s go home.”
- Obey: “I don’t understand it, but I’ll do it.”
He chose C.
That is obedience in the face of failure.
It’s not obedience when things are working. That’s easy.
It’s obedience when your experience says “this won’t work,” but God’s word says “do it again.”

WHY GOD ASKS US TO “LET DOWN THE NETS” AGAIN
Was Jesus trying to embarrass Peter? No. He was trying to elevate him.
God often asks us to repeat the last thing He told us, especially after failure, for 4 reasons:
- To test our trust, not our talent: Peter’s talent had failed. Now God wanted his trust. Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.”
- To shift the source of success: If Peter caught fish by skill, he’d get the glory. If he caught fish by obedience, God would get the glory. John 15:5 "Apart from me you can do nothing."
- To teach us timing: The fish weren’t there at 3am. But they were there at 6am when Jesus said so. Ecclesiastes 3:1 “There is a time for everything.”
- To give us a testimony: No one remembers the nights Peter caught fish on his own. Everyone remembers the day he obeyed Jesus and the nets began to break. God wants to give you a story, not just a salary.
THE RESULT: OVERFLOW THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
Peter obeyed. And the result was ridiculous.
_“When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.” Luke 5:6
He called partners. Both boats were so full they began to sink.
That one act of obedience did 4 things:
- Provision: The empty nets became overflowing nets. God repaid the night of nothing.
- Perspective: Peter fell at Jesus’ knees: “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” Luke 5:8. He saw who Jesus was.
- Purpose: Jesus said, “From now on you will fish for people.” Luke 5:10. The failure in fishing led to a calling in ministry.
- Power: Peter went from discouraged fisherman to apostle who would preach at Pentecost and see 3000 saved. Acts 2:41
One “because you say so” changed his entire destiny.
OBEDIENCE IN 2026: WHEN IT DOESN’T MAKE SENSE
We live in a “data-driven” generation. If it does not add up, we do not do it.
But the Kingdom runs on a different equation: Obedience + God = Multiplication.
Here’s what “let down the nets again” might look like for you:
- For the soldier: Doing your duty with excellence when promotion has delayed and no one is watching.
- For the spouse: Choosing to love, pray, and serve when the marriage feels empty.
- For the entrepreneur: Launching again after the last business failed, this time with God’s direction.
- For the believer: Forgiving that person again. Tithing again. Serving in that department again. Praying for that child again.
It feels illogical. But “because you say so” is the language of faith.
5 TRUTHS ABOUT OBEDIENCE AFTER FAILURE
- God is not asking for success. He’s asking for surrender.
He wants the nets, not just the fish. He wants your yes.
- Your experience is real, but it’s not final.
Peter was right about the empty night. But Jesus was righter about the coming miracle.
- Delayed obedience is disobedience.
The miracle happened when the nets went down, not when Peter thought about it. James 1:22 “Be doers of the word.”
- What you learn in obedience is greater than what you gain in success.
Peter gained fish that day. But he gained Jesus. And Jesus was the greater catch.
- God honors those who honor Him.
1 Samuel 2:30 “Those who honor me I will honor.” When you obey His word above your feelings, He glorifies Himself in your life.
A WORD TO THE WEARY WORKER
Maybe you feel like Peter this morning.
You have worked hard. You have prayed hard. You have given your best. And the result is... nothing.
I hear the Lord saying to you what He said to Peter: “Let down the nets one more time.”
Not because the strategy changed.
But because I am here now.
Your “because you say so” is about to become your breakthrough.
The emptiness is about to become abundance.
The failure is about to become a testimony.

THE PATTERN THROUGHOUT SCRIPTURE
This is not the only time God asked for obedience after failure:
- Noah: Build an ark when there was no rain.
- Abraham: Offer Isaac after waiting 25 years.
- Naaman: Dip 7 times in dirty water to be healed. 2 Kings 5:10
- The widow: Pour oil into empty jars. 2 Kings 4:3
God’s pattern: He asks for obedience first, then He brings the miracle.
Prayer:
Faithful Lord,
You see my empty nets. You see the nights I’ve worked hard and caught nothing.
Today I choose to say what Peter said: “Because You say so, I will obey.”
