Text: Ruth 2:12
_“May the Lord repay you for what you have done. May you be richly rewarded by the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.”
There are stories in the Bible that feel like they were written for ordinary people. Ruth’s story is one of them.
No palace. No big title. No miracle fire from heaven. Just a widow, a mother-in-law, a field, and a God who sees.
THE BACKGROUND: FROM LOSS TO LOYALTY
Ruth and Naomi’s story begins with emptiness. Famine drove Naomi’s family from Bethlehem to Moab. Then death took Naomi’s husband and both her sons. Ruth lost her husband too.
Two widows. No income. No security. In that culture, that meant vulnerability.
When Naomi decided to return to Bethlehem, she told her daughters-in-law to go back to their gods and their people. Orpah kissed her and left. But Ruth clung.
And she said words that have echoed for 3000 years: _“Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.”_ Ruth 1:16
That was loyalty. Not convenient loyalty. Not “as long as things are good” loyalty. This was covenant loyalty — the kind that chooses to stay when leaving would be easier.
Ruth left Moab, her gods, her comfort, her language, to follow an old widow and a God she barely knew. She didn’t know where it would lead. She only knew who she was going with.
THE FIELD: FAITHFULNESS IN SMALL THINGS
Back in Bethlehem, there was no food. So Ruth did what the law allowed the poor to do. Leviticus 19:9-10 says farmers must leave the edges of their field and not pick up what falls, so the poor and foreigners can glean.
Gleaning was hard work. Bend down. Pick grain. Walk miles. Do it again. In the sun. With eyes watching you.
But Ruth showed up daily. She wasn’t complaining. She wasn’t scheming. She was just faithful with what was in front of her.
That’s how God often works. Before the promotion comes the field. Before the open door comes the daily grind. God tests our heart in small, unseen places.
And here is the key line: _“In God’s providence”_ Ruth 2:3. She “happened” to come to the field of Boaz. But with God there are no accidents. While Ruth was being loyal to Naomi, God was arranging her future.
BOAZ SEES: WHEN HEAVEN NOTICES
Boaz was a man of standing. Wealthy. Godly. A relative of Naomi’s husband. When he arrived at the field he greeted his workers: _“The Lord be with you.”_ They answered: _“The Lord bless you.”_
That’s rare. A boss who fears God.
Then he noticed Ruth. He asked his foreman, “Whose young woman is this?” The foreman told him everything — how she left Moab, how she cared for Naomi, how she’s been gleaning since morning.
And Boaz gave her more than grain. He gave her protection, provision, and a blessing that became Scripture:
_“May the Lord repay you for what you have done. May you be richly rewarded by the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.”_ Ruth 2:12
Notice two things about that blessing:
1. It was a prayer: Boaz asked God to pay Ruth back.
2. It was a testimony: He told Ruth, “What you did was seen. By me. And by God.”
Loyalty doesn’t go unnoticed. Not by people, and definitely not by heaven.
“UNDER GOD’S WINGS”
That phrase is powerful. _“Under whose wings you have come to take refuge.”_
The Bible uses “wings” to describe God’s protection.
Psalm 91:4 — _“He will cover you with his feathers.”_
Matthew 23:37 — Jesus weeps: _“How often I wanted to gather your children together as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings.”_
Wings mean: safety, warmth, covering, mothering. When you run to God, you are not exposed to the storms of life alone.
Ruth left the gods of Moab and came to take refuge under the God of Israel. And because she chose God’s people, God chose to cover her.
The same is true for us. When we are loyal to God and to people, we position ourselves under His wings. We may not see it, but we are covered.
LOYALTY IN 2026: RARE BUT REWARDED
Let’s be honest. We live in a time of conditional loyalty.
We have “friends” who are there for the cruise, not the crisis.
Employees who work hard only when the boss is watching.
Spouses who threaten to leave when money gets tight.
Christians who serve God only when He answers fast.
But the Kingdom of God rewards a different kind of person. The one who stays.
- The spouse who chooses to work on the marriage.
- The friend who shows up at the hospital.
- The soldier who does his duty even when no officer is looking.
- The worker who is honest even when she could cut corners.
- The child who honors aging parents.
It feels like gleaning sometimes. Small. Slow. Unnoticed.
But heaven is watching. And God repays.
Proverbs 3:3-4 — _“Let love and faithfulness never leave you... Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.”_
THE REWARD: MORE THAN SHE IMAGINED
Ruth’s loyalty didn’t just get her a meal. It changed her lineage.
Because she was faithful:
1. Provision: Boaz told his men to intentionally drop grain for her. She went from gleaning scraps to eating at the master’s table.
2. Protection: Boaz told other men not to touch her.
3. Position: She became Boaz’s wife.
4. Purpose: She became the great-grandmother of King David, and an ancestor in the line of Jesus Christ. Matthew 1:5-6
5. Place in Scripture: An entire book bears her name.
God took her faithfulness in a field and turned it into legacy.
That’s how God works. He doesn’t waste loyalty. He multiplies it.
LESSONS FOR US TODAY
First: Be loyal before you are famous. Ruth was faithful with grain before she was faithful with a crown. God promotes those who are faithful in little. Luke 16:10
Second: Loyalty costs. Ruth gave up her country, comfort, and options. Real loyalty always costs something. But it also gains something greater.
Third: God is the ultimate rewarder. Hebrews 6:10 — _“God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown.”_ Even if people forget, God remembers.
Fourth: Take refuge under His wings. Run to God first. When you are covered by Him, you can afford to be loyal to others without fear of being used.
A WORD TO THE WEARY
Maybe you feel like Ruth today. Gleaning. Tired. Wondering if anyone sees.
The spouse trying to keep the home together.
The friend who always gives but rarely receives.
The believer serving in church with no applause.
Hear Boaz’s words to you: _“May the Lord repay you for what you have done.”_
Your tears are in a bottle. Psalm 56:8
Your work is not in vain. 1 Corinthians 15:58
Your loyalty is seed, and God is bringing the harvest.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, the God of Israel, under whose wings we take refuge,
Thank You for seeing what no one else sees.
Give me grace to be that committed spouse, that loyal friend, that faithful son or daughter, that diligent worker.
Help me to choose loyalty when it’s hard, and faithfulness when it’s hidden.
Reward me according to Your mercy, not my merit.
Cover me with Your wings. Lead me like You led Ruth.

Insight:
A life lived with loyalty is a blessed life. God sees, God remembers, and God rewards. What you do in secret, He will reward openly.
