PERSONAL ACCOUNTABILITY BEFORE GOD

Jeremiah 31:30 Instead, everyone will die for their own sin. Whoever eats sour grapes their own teeth will be set on edge.

Jeremiah speaks of a shift from collective judgment to personal accountability.

In earlier times, children often suffered consequences of their ancestor sins.

The saying used to be, the parents have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge (Jeremiah 31:29).

However, here God clarifies that each person bears responsibility for their choices.

The consequences of sin is no longer considered as inheritance, everyone must be held accountable for their own deeds.

The image of the effect of sour grapes on the teeth illustrates how sin brings direct and personal consequences.

This teaches us the seriousness of individual responsibility before God.

It is easy today to blame family background, culture, environment or leaders for our failures.

While environment influences, it does not dictate destiny.

Everyone must make their choice and be held accountable for the choice they make.

A child of a wicked parent can decide to follow Christ while a child of a godly parent can decide to follow the path of evil.

We must decide daily weather to walk in obedience to rebellion.

Let us be wary of shifting blames, but be ready to take responsibility.

While parents and leaders could be held accountable for bad parenting and bad leadership respectively, God treats us as individuals when it comes to our relationship with him.

Strength is found in taking responsibility for choices and leaning on God for help.

Excuses cannot stand before him.

Each life is accountable, yet grace empowers is to choose rightly.

Gracious father, grant me grace to live in obedience and to make choices that are justifiable before you.

We all have personal account to render before God.
