WHEN THE WORLD DEMANDS A SHOW

Text: John 7:4: “No one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret. Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world.”

THE PRESSURE TO PERFORM

There is a temptation that visits every child of God, every soldier, every leader, and every minister of the gospel. It is the temptation to prove yourself. To show that you have arrived. To do something spectacular just because people are watching.

Our text today reveals a very painful moment in the life of our Lord Jesus Christ. The pressure was not coming from the Pharisees or the Romans. It was coming from His own family, His own brothers.

The Bible says in John 7:5, “For even his own brothers did not believe in him.” They did not understand His mission. They looked at Jesus through the lens of human ambition, not divine purpose.

The Feast of Tabernacles was approaching, a great festival in Jerusalem. All of Israel would gather in Judea. It was a time of great public display. His brothers came to Him with what sounded like good advice but was actually unbelief wrapped in sarcasm.

“No one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret,” they said. “Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world.”

In other words: “If you are really the Messiah, stop hiding here in Galilee. Go to Jerusalem. Do some big miracles there. Make a name for yourself. Show off. Let the whole world see. And by the way, let us be proud that we are Your brothers – yea, that’s our brother!”

They wanted to use Jesus to boost their own ego. They wanted a show.

But Jesus refused. And His refusal teaches us one of the most important leadership lessons of our time: Purpose must never be sacrificed on the altar of popularity.

UNDERSTANDING THE DEMAND FOR A SHOW (John 7:3-4)

Why did His brothers ask Him to show Himself to the world? There were three motives hidden in their request.

  • Unbelief Disguised as Advice: They said, “Since you are doing these things…” It was mockery. They had seen His miracles, yet they did not believe. Many people will advise you not because they believe in you, but because they want to test you. Be careful of advice that comes from unbelief.

  • The Love of Public Applause: They said, “No one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret.” Their definition of success was public figure, fame, crowd, and applause. In their thinking, if you are truly great, you must be seen by everyone. This is the same spirit of the world today. We measure anointing by followers, success by likes, and greatness by how loud the crowd shouts.

  • Selfish Gain: If Jesus became famous in Jerusalem, His brothers would enjoy the reflected glory. It was pride. They wanted to say, “We are related to the miracle worker.” Many people push you to show off not for your good, but for their own pride.

This is exactly how Satan tempted Jesus in the wilderness. “Throw yourself down from the temple, let everyone see that angels will carry you” (Matthew 4:5-6). It was a temptation to make a public show out of divine power. Jesus refused then, and He refused again in John 7.

THE DANGERS OF PERFORMING FOR THE CROWD

Jesus’ response is our model. He said to them, “My time is not yet here; for you any time will do… You go to the festival. I am not going up to this festival, because my time has not yet fully come” (John 7:6-8).

Jesus refused to be driven by public pressure. His timing was set by the Father, not by His family, not by the crowd, not by the calendar of men.

This is very relevant to us today as soldiers and as Christians.

  • The Soldier Tempted to Abuse Power: A soldier is often tempted to use the power of his uniform to prove a point. A relative calls: “My landlord has locked my house, come and show yourself.” A friend says: “Someone is owing me money, use your uniform and follow me to collect it.” A civilian says: “You are a soldier, you can pass anywhere.” If you yield to that demand for a show of power, you will enter into trouble, disciplinary action, and you will bring shame to the uniform and to the name of Christ. The Nigerian Army is a professional force, not a tool for personal show.

  • The Husband or Wife Pushed Beyond His Means: Some wives have pushed their husbands to do what is beyond their power just to impress others. “Your mate has bought a car, you must also show that you are a man.” “You must do a big wedding, big birthday, big burial to show them.” Many have entered debt, fraud, and even corruption because of the pressure to prove their worth. Proverbs warns us that pride goes before a fall.

  • The Minister Forced to Manufacture Miracles: This is perhaps the most dangerous. Some men of God today have been forced by the demand for a show to give false prophecies, arrange fake miracles, or stage deliverance just to satisfy those who hype them. They have a crowd, and the crowd demands a show every Sunday. To keep the crowd, they manufacture what God is not doing. Jesus refused to perform on demand. True ministry is not entertainment. If God has not spoken, keep quiet. If God has not healed, pray and wait. Better to be faithful than to be famous.

The pressure to prove yourself can lead to error. Samson proved himself one last time to the Philistines and died with them. Saul offered a sacrifice to prove he could be a priest like Samuel and lost his kingdom. Do not prove yourself into trouble.

THE SECRET OF A PURPOSE-DRIVEN LIFE: GOD’S TIMING, NOT PUBLIC OPINION

Why did Jesus not go when they wanted Him to go? Because His life was governed by a different clock.

Ecclesiastes 3:11 says, “He has made everything beautiful in its time.”

Jesus lived by Kairos – God’s appointed time, not Chronos – man’s calendar.

There are three lessons from Jesus’ decision:

  • Not Every Opportunity is Divine: The Feast in Jerusalem was a great opportunity to be seen. Thousands were there. It was a perfect stage. But Jesus knew that what looks like opportunity can be a distraction. Just because a door is open does not mean God opened it. Some opportunities are traps to take you out of God’s will prematurely. Ask: Is this God’s timing for me?

  • Your Value Does Not Come from Public Validation: His brothers thought hiding meant He was not important. Jesus knew His identity did not depend on Jerusalem’s applause. He was the Son of God even when He was silent in a carpenter’s shop in Nazareth for 30 years. Stop living for validation. The same crowd that shouts “Hosanna” today will shout “Crucify Him” tomorrow. Let your identity be rooted in what God says about you, not what people say.

  • Obedience is Better Than Showmanship: Jesus eventually went to the feast, but not openly, He went in secret (John 7:10). He went when God said go, and how God said go. That is obedience. He did not go to show off, He went to do the Father’s will. When He did show Himself, it was not with a political show, but with teaching the truth.

As a soldier, as a leader, as a Christian, let your life be driven by divine command, not human applause. Let your motto be: “I will do what God says, when God says, how God says.”

In the barracks, it takes courage to say “No, I cannot use my uniform for that.” In ministry, it takes courage to say “God has not said anything, let us pray.” In family, it takes courage to say “We cannot afford that show-off now, let us wait for God’s time.” That courage is called integrity.

STAY GROUNDED IN PURPOSE, NOT POPULARITY

The world today is obsessed with showing. Social media is built on it, show your house, show your money, show your anointing, show your uniform. But a life of purpose is not a life of showmanship.

Jesus’ brothers wanted Him to become a public figure. Jesus wanted to remain a faithful Son. In the end, who is remembered? The brothers who wanted a show are forgotten. The Christ who waited for God’s time is worshipped forever.

Do not be moved by the pressure of relatives, friends, or even church members who want you to show yourself. You do not need to prove anything to anyone. You need to obey God.

If God says wait, wait. If God says go quietly, go quietly. If God says do not perform, do not perform.

Your time will come. And when it comes, God Himself will announce you. As Mordecai was honoured at the right time, as David was anointed at the right time, your elevation will be beautiful in its time.

Stay grounded.

PRAYER:

Almighty God, my Father, deliver me from the urge to impress people. Forgive me for the times I have acted out of pressure to prove myself. Give me the courage to say NO when the world demands a show that is not Your will. Teach me to walk only in Your timing and Your will. Let my life be driven by divine command and not by human applause. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.

INSIGHT:

A life of purpose is driven by divine command, not human applause. Not every open door is from God; wait for His timing.
