Crystal Palace have agreed a deal in principle for Pierre Sage to become their new head coach, stepping up their pursuit after primary target Andoni Iraola was snapped up by Liverpool.

The Eagles are finalizing a compensation package with RC Lens, and the French tactician is expected to sign a three year contract at Selhurst Park with an option for an additional year.

Palace found themselves searching for a leadership after Oliver Glasner decided not to renew his contract which expires on June 30.

It is a pairing born out of a shared hunger for silverware. Palace are riding the wave of a historic golden era, having lifted the FA Cup, and community shield, under Glasner over the last 12 months.

Meanwhile, Sage is fresh off a sensational campaign with Lens, where he pushed PSG to the limit in the Ligue 1 title race and delivered the first trophy in Lens history by capturing the Coupe de France.

Tactically, the transition should be seamless. Like Glasner, Sage has a proven track record utilizing a robust back three system.

At Lens, he mastered the art of building a lethal, attack-minded side without needing to dominate the possession a blueprint that fits Palace perfectly.

While he lacks Premier League experience, neither did Glasner before taking South London by storm.

THE RAPID RISE OF PIERRE SAGE

Few managerial stories in modern football have moved as quickly as Pierre Sage's. In November 2023, he stepped up from Lyon's youth setup to take charge of an Olympique Lyonnais side sitting bottom of Ligue 1. What happened next was a tactical turnaround few saw coming.

Sega stabilized a fractured dressing room and overhauled Lyon's style. He shifted Les Gones from relegation danger to a late surge for European qualification, while also guiding them to the Coupe de France final. His blend of pragmatic defending and fluid attacking play immediately put him on the radar of clubs across Europe.

CAREER PROGRESSION

After his impact at Lyon, Sage moved to RC Lens ahead of the 2025/2026 season.

The appointment reinforced his reputation as one of France's most promising young coaches. Across nearly 100 senior matches in Ligue 1 Sage has consistently delivered strong results, averaging over 2.00 points per match. That record suggests his success at Lyon was not a short term boost, but the start of a clear managerial identity.

TACTICAL APPROACH

Sage favours a flexible 3-4-2-1 system built on three core principles:

● Verticality: quick progression through the thirds rather than the slow build up

● Compact defensive block: Disciplined  shape out of possession to limit space between the lines.

● Creative freedom for attacking midfielders: allowing the two 10s to rotate and exploit gaps behind opposition defenses.

The result is a side that scores freely without sacrificing the structure. A style that translates well across different squads and leagues.

WHY SAGE STANDS OUT

At age 45, Sage combines youth academy knowledge with senior-level results.

He's shown he can rescue a team mid-season, implement a clear tactical plan quickly, and get buy-in from players. Those traits make him a strong candidate for clubs looking for long-term growth.

As his career at Lens progresses, Sage is proving that modern coaching is not just about big names, but about clear ideas, adaptability, and the ability to elevate a team fast.
