The value of discretion

Proverbs 11:13

A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy person keeps a secret.

Today's text is a contrast between the destructive nature of gossip and the value of discretion.

In ancient Israel, words carried weight and could shape reputations, relationships, and even communities.

The Hebrew word translated is gossip refers to a talebearer, one who spreads harmful secrets.

Such behavior undermines trust and causes division.

In contrast, a trustworthy person is described as one who guards secrets, reflecting integrity, maturity, and reverence for God.

It is a reminder for believers that speech is not neutral. It either builds up or tears down.

It is also a reminder that God delights in those who use words to protect rather than to damage the reputation of others.

We are in a world where information spreads very fast.

Like a doctor sworn to keep patient confidentiality, so must a believer treat the secrets of others entrusted to them.

Gossip may seem small, but it destroys friendships, relationships and families.

Some have exposed themselves to embarrassment for not being able to keep secrets.

The damage caused by unbridled tongue cannot be undone.

As Christians, we are called to be instruments of trust, mirroring Christ who bore our sins without exposing us to shame.

Today, let us examine how we handle the secrets and stories of others.

Do we spread them for attention, or do we guard them in love? Let us always remind ourselves that true wisdom is revealed in discretion and not in talkativeness, (proverbs17:28, James, 3:2).

Therefore, let our words bring healing and not damage.

Gracious Lord, help me to bridle my tongue.

Gossip is a deadly venom that spreads rapidly and powered by idleness
