SPAIN 1-0 PORTUGAL - MIKEL MERINO ENDS CRISTIANO ROLANDO WORLD CUP DREAM IN DALLAS

Cristiano Ronaldo final World Cup endedvin heartbreak as Mikel Merino's 90+1 winner sent Spain through 1-0. Full match report, stats, and what Spain vs USA/Belgium means next.

Cristiano Rolando's fairytale ending will never come.

Spain ground out a tense, tactical 1-0 victory over Iberian rivals Portugal in Dallas to reach the World Cup quarter finals for the first time since 2010. And it was substitute Mikel Merino who delivered the fatal blow in stoppage time, ending Rolando's 5th and final World Cup in the process.

It was pretty. It wasn't free flowing. But it was effective. Spain are through to face the winner of USA vs Belgium, while Portugal head home with their superstar captain in tears.

HOW THE GAME WAS WON

For 90 minutes this felt like it was heading straight to penalties. Spain dominated possession but lacked a cutting edge. Portugal defended deep and looked to Ronaldo for inspiration.

The breakthrough came in the 91st minute.

Ferran Torres picked the ball up on the edge of the box and slid a clever pass into the path of Mikel Merino, who had only come on 15 minutes earlier. The Arsenal midfielder took one touch and finished with ice in his veins, slotting past Diogo Costa to spark wild celebrations from Luis de la Fuente's bench.

One chance. One goal. That's all it took to decide an Iberian derby.

ROLANDO'S LAST DANCE END IN FRUSTRATION

The story of the night was Rolando.

Before kickoff, the 41 year old confirmed this would be his last World Cup. After the final whistle, cameras caught him emotional, hands on hips, starting at the Dallas turf knowing it was over.

Portugal never showed up for him.

Spain's defensive block was suffocating. Portugal managed just 1 shot on target all game. And that one shot came from Ronaldo himself in the 73rd minute, a tame effort that Unai Simon gethered easily.

No service. No chances. No fairytale.

Rolando finishes his World Cup career with 8 goals in 22 games. 5 tournaments. But no trophy to go with the Euros he won in 2016.

SPAIN'S DEFENSIVE WALL MAKES HISTORY

For all the criticism of Spain's lacks of goal, you cannot argue with the numbers.

This 1-0 win means Spain have now kept 6 consecutive clean sheets at the World Cup a new tournament record. They are yet to concede a single goal in 2026.

Luis de la Fuente has built a team in the mold of 2010. Control possession, defend as a unit, and win ugly if you have to. Rodri and Laporte were immense at the back. Pedri dictated tempo.

They weren't spectacular. But they were professional. And in knockout football, that wins tournaments.

WHAT NEXT

Spain advance to the quarter finals for the first time since lifting the trophy in South Africa 2010.

They will now face either the host USA or FIFA #3 Belgium on Friday. Based on form, it will be a much tougher test than Portugal offered.

For Portugal, the rebuild starts now. Without Ronaldo, Roberto Martinez has major questions. Who leads the line? Who provides the star power? The golden generation had its last shot.

This was not a classic. But it was significant.

Spain proved they can win without flair. Portugal proved they still rely too much on one man. And the World Cup said goodbye to one of its greatest ever players.

Rolando dream is over. Spain's march continues.
