ARGENTINA SURVIVE CAPE VERDE MIRACLE AS BORGES OWN GOAL RESCUES 3-2 EXTRA TIME WIN

Argentina survived the biggest scare in World Cup history, beating Cape Verde 3-2 in extra time thanks to a Diney Borges own goal. Messi scored, Martinez and Romero were heroes, but Cape Verde's Sidny Lopes Cabral produced the goal of the tournament.

Miami Stadium witnessed history. Just not the kind Argentina wanted.

The reigning world champions avoided the biggest upset in World Cup history by the skin of their teeth, beating Cape verde 3-2 in extra time. A Diney Borges own goal from a Cristian Romero header in the 115th minute was the difference.

From 103 minutes, a nation of just 600,000 people had the footballing world holding its breath. And even in defeat, Cape Verde walked off as the story of the tournament.

It looked routine. Lionel Messi opened the scoring with a sublime finish early on. Business as usual for Argentina. The crowd relaxed. The headlines were already being written.

Then came the jolt. Deroy Duarte squeezed a low drive into the far corner just before the hour mark 1-1

Argentina suddenly looked sloppy. Laboured. Nervous. Cape Verde, playing in their first ever World Cup, smelled blood.

Just when Argentina thought they'd escape, Lisandro Martinez whipped a stunning volley into the top right corner 2 minutes into extra time. 2-1. Blushes spared. Or so they thought.

Sidny Lopes Cabral had other ideas. He picked the  up 25 yards out and curled an absolute rocket into the top corner. Miami Stadium went silent.

Given the opponent, the occasion, and the quality, it's an instant contender for goal of the tournament. 2-2. The impossible suddenly felt possible.

Tension was suffocating Argentina. Belief was growing for Cape Verde.

Then a corner. Cristian Romero rose highest. His header crashed against Diney Borges and defected in 3-2 Argentina.

Cape Verde threw everything forward but couldn't find a third. The whistle blew. Argentina survived.

PLAYER RATING AND KEY MOMENTS

Argentina

* Lionel Messi: The operner settled nerves, but he was marshalled brilliantly after that.

* Lisandro Martinez: Stepped up when it mattered. That volley looked like the winner.

* Cristian Romero: Won the header that caused the winner. Also had to defend for his life.

* Emi Martinez: Made key saves to keep Argentina alive during Cape Verde's surges.

Cape Verde

* Vozinha: 8 saves. A heroic performance in goal. Kept them in it.

* Deroy Duarte: Calm finish to get them level.

* Diney Borges: Unlucky with the OG, but immense otherwise.

They were relentless defensively. Fearless going forward. And they drew level twice against Messi's Argentina.

Lopes Cabral's strike alone deserves to be in World Cup history books. But the whole team deserves to be welcome home as heroes. They will inspire a generation of kids back home.

Lionel Scaloni will not be happy. This was far from the dominant display expected from world champions.

Positives: They showed character. They found a way to win when playing badly. Martinez and Romero delivered in clutch moments.

Negatives: The midfield was overrun. The defense looked exposed to counters. And they relied on an own goal progress.

A tiny island nation took the champions to the brink. They played without fear. They produced moments of magic. They gave us the goal and the story of the tournament so far.

The expanded format in USA, Canada and Mexico 2026 was made for stories like this. Cape Verde may be out, but they proved that on their day, anyone can complete with anyone.

Argentina are through. They'll face Egypt next and they need to be much better.

But tonight belongs to Cape Verde.

To the 600,000 people back home. To Vozinha's 8 saves. To Duarte's equalizer. To Lopes Cabral's worldie.

They didn't win. But they won everyone's respect.

And in football sometimes that's bigger than 3 point.
