Switzerland beat Canada 2-1 in Vancouver. Ruben Vargas scored 40 seconds into 2nd half, Johan Manzambi doubled lead. Promise David replied 73 seconds off bench but Canada settle for 2nd in Group B and lose Vancouver home tie.
BC Place went quite. What was supposed to be a coronation for Canada's World Cup hosts turned into a reality check. Switzerland produced a ruthless 10 minute second half blitz through Ruben Vargas and Johan Manzambi to win 2-1, steel top spot in Group B, and send the Canadians into the knockout rounds without home advantage.
Jesse Marsch's side entered knowing a point would secure 1st place thanks to superior goal difference. Instead, 45 minutes of passivity followed by a chaotic start to the second half left them shell shocked. Promise David's instant impact off the bench gave Vancouver hope, but Gregor kobel's late heroics ensured Switzerland took all 3 points.
Canada still make history by reaching the round of 32 for the first time. But finishing 2nd mesns they lose the luxury of staying in Vancouver. They now face a trip to Los Angeles and a likely last 32 clash with South Korea. Switzerland top the group and will face a third place team from group E, F, G, I, or J.
FIRST HALF STALEMATE - NEITHER SIDE GAMBLES
The opening 45 minutes felt like a chess match where both players refused to move. Canada sat deep, content with a draw. Switzerland probed from wide areas but never committed numbers forward.
Breel Embolo wasted the best chance of the half in the 11th minute, heading wide from close range after a Stephen Eustaquio error. Beyond that, chances were rare. The crowd tried to lift the team, but Canada looked like a side that knew qualification was already secured.
Jesse Marsch promised pre match that his team "wouldn't play for a draw." On the pitch, it didn't look that way. Canada were tentative, slow in possession, and failed to get Alphonso Davies or Jonathan David involved. The idea of topping the group and staying in Vancouver for the last 32 didn't translate into urgency.
10 MINUTE SWISS BLITZ CHANGES EVERYTHING
Whatever Murat Yakin said at halftime worked immediately.
46 minute GOAL! Vargas strikes in 40 seconds. No feeling out period. Ruben Vargas picked up the ball 25 yards out, cut inside past Alistair Johnston and fired a fierce low shot past Maxime Crepeau. 1-0 Switzerland, 40 seconds into the second half. BC Place was stunned into silence.
57 MINUTE GOAL! MANZAMBI PUNISHES POOR DEFENDING
Canada didn't react. Ten minutes leter, more defensive chaos. A loose clearance fell to Johan Manzambi inside the box. He showed composure to squeeze his shot underneath Crepeau at the near post. The Canadian keeper should have done better. 2-0. Game flipped on its head.
Switzerland's game plan was clear, absorb pressure, hit Canada in transition, and let the hosts chase. With 2-0 goal lead, they could sit back and let Canada's anxiety grow.
PROMISE DAVID SPARKS LATE RALLY BUT KOBEL SAYS NO
Marsch finally acted. He threw on Promise David and the impact latched onto a cross and fired home with his first touch. 2-1. BC Place erupted. Suddenly Canada had 15 minutes + stoppage time to save their group win.
They pushed hard. Nico Elvedi made a crucial block in the 68th minute to deny David from 8 yards. Then in 90+3 and 90+6, Swiss keeper Gregor Kobel produced a two world class saves to keep out David's headers. The second save, tipping a bullet header over the bar, was the moment that killed Canada's comeback.
Too Little, too late. The damage was done in that 10 minute window after halftime.
ANALYSIS - MARSCH'S TACTICAL REGRET AND CANADIAN HEART
Sky sports Callum Bishop:
"Jesse Marsch promised they wouldn't play for a draw. Yet they only turned up when they had to salvage one. For 45 minutes they were passive, sloppy and didn't do anything to get the crouch on their feet. David's introduction lit a fire, but it was too little too late."
Marsch admitted his mistake post match: "The only thing I wish I would have done differently is gone to five at the back at halftime to lock things down. When we come out like that, I wish I would have done that. I think I should have done that."
Ian Wright called Marsch performative, accusing aim of not pushing out enough for top sport. Marsch deflected by praising his team's heart: "I know our team had heart. We'll focus on the positive and respond. Good performance off the bench."
On Alphonso Davies missing out: "We managed him to avoid danger. He should be ready for the next match." Managing a star player made sense, but the passive approach without him frustrated fans.
Canada made history, but losing top spot stings. The passive first half and slow reaction after Vargas opener cost them. Switzerland were clinical and now have a kinder knockout draw.
Both teams reset now. For Canada, the tournament isn't over it's just moving to LA. For Switzerland, top spot gives belief they can go deep.
