CHRIS BILLAM-SMITH STOPS RYAN ROZICKI BY TKO IN EPIC CRUISERWEIGHT BATTLE

Billam-Smith stormed back into world title contention with a brutal 7th round TKO of Rozicki, thrilling a packed Bournemouth crowd in a fight of the year contender.

Hometown hero Chris Billam-Smith moved back into world title contention after a dramatic, grueling stop victory over Ryan Rozicki at a packed Bournemouth international center.

In what immediately entered the conversation for Fight of the year, Billam-Smith had to dig deep against the dangerous Canadian knockout artist.

Rozicki was cut over his left eye in the first round and deducted a point for a headbutt in the second round, before being severely wobbled by a massive right hand from Billam-Smith in the third round.

After seven rounds of brutal, shifting momentum, Rozicki's corner pulled their man out due to his injuries.

Both fighters ended up in the hospital as a precaution following the contest.

While neither spoke to the media, Billam-Smith later spoke on his social media that he was absolutely fine and undergoing routine test.

Rozicki was discharged on Sunday morning to recover at his hotel.

Chris Billam-Smith long-awaited return to Bournemouth was anything but easy. Visiting knockout specialist Rozicki immediately turned the fight into a brutal war, pressuring the home favorite with relentless power punches and opening cuts early on.

Despite dealing with blood pouring from both eyes, Rozicki refused to back down forcing Billam-Smith onto the defensive through the middle rounds. The turning point came in the sixth round when Billam-Smith answered a ferocious assault with a massive multi punch combination that electrified the crowd.

By the end of the seventh round, a final unanswered barrage from Billam-Smith forced Rozicki's corner to throw in the towel.

Reflecting on the brutal boxing match, trainer Shane McGuigan did not hide his relief. ''I have never seen a puncher like that guy in my life, has been in my gym nine years, but the power that guy possesses, oh my goodness. He's wide open, throwing bombs when he's getting caught with peach shots. As a friend and coach, it was horrible to sit there and watch''.

Billam-Smith had ring rust, but he did exactly what he had to do and outlasted an extremely tough man.

Zuffa Boxing head Dana White didn't hold back his praise after Billam-Smith absolute war with the meanest Canadian he's ever met.

Comparing the main event to a Rocky movie, White was mesmerized by Billam-Smith ability to absorb massive power shots from a certified knockout artist like Rozicki while still executing at highest level.
''We knew it had all the makings of a great fight'', White said, highlighting a chaotic sixth round where Billam-Smith truly turned the tide. Billam-Smith is not just tough, he is super talented.
''He took some big shots from a knockout artist, but he's a great fighter in his own right''.

WHAT NEXT FOR CHRIS BILLAM-SMITH

Following Billam-Smith thrilling seventh round victory over Rozicki at the Bournemouth international center, the boxing world is doing its usual routine of drafting a list of five potential next opponents.

Billam-Smith must face Jai Opetaia next. Both fighters are under the Zuffa Boxing banner, making the politics seamless.  Opetaia has ruled the division since his 2022 win over Mairis Briedis, but his recent promotional debut a decision win over Brandon Glanton lacked fireworks.  Ironically, Billam-Smith fought a riskier version of Glanton previously and got far less credit for it.

Unless Opetaia can lure light heavyweight giant like Beterbiev or Bivol up in weight, Billam-Smith is his most accomplished and logical foe.
Billam-Smith is a proven action fighter who just delivered a fight of the year contender. If Zuffa wants to build its identity and if Opetaia wants to create highlight reel moments, bookings this match-up for the fall is an absolute no-brainer.
